MEET THE INNKEEPERS
Carol Lee Tieman
Morning Dove Inn, Belmar

Carol Lee Tieman finds it surprising that her guests often want to pitch in and help out around the inn, whether it's weeding the garden or shoveling snow in winter.

One time one of her employees was out sickso a guest offered to help out. Carol said, "Sure, if you really want to, you can strip the sheets and throw 'em down the back stairs."

She later received an email from the guest, saying how much fun she had throwing those sheets down the stairs. "When she comes this weekend," says Carol, "I'm going to write her a note: 'Monday you can bake the brownies. Tuesday you can change the towels. Wednesday you can weed the garden.' That's the kind of fun I can have with my guests!"

Fun Fact: Carol is very involved in disaster relief and has been down to Mississippi six times to help with rebuilding. Because she can stay for several weeks, she usually runs the volunteer center, coordinating more than 70 volunteers.

Nancy Gallimore
Sandcastle Bed & Breakfast, Barnegat Light

Nancy Gallimore never dreamt of becoming an innkeeper. For years she worked in the commercial fishing industry with her former husband.

"We built this building as our home with a store down below. The whole first level was a commercial fishing store, offices and workshops. The current exercise room had 40,000 pounds of frozen squid for bait!"

Her ex was a fisherman and ultimately went out and caught a "different fish," leaving Nancy with a whole lot of house and a big mortgage. After much deliberation, she converted it to a bed-n-breakfast and has been hosting guests ever since.

While it's sometimes tough being a single innkeeper Nancy loves the freedom. "You don't have anyone to tell you what to do."

Fun Fact: Nancy is a pilot and loves to fly her small plane.
