Making Family Memories

Hundreds of wooly sheep gather in a barn awaiting their spring makeovers. The ewes get their new "dos" at the Annual Shearing Festival at Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley, about an hour from New York City.

Festival-goers witness the shaving down of nearly 550 sheep and may also get a glimpse of a new arrival or two as there are currently 600 ewes pregnant and due any day. The festival takes place on May 8th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Amidst the live music and crafts, sample a dozen varieties of cheeses made of raw sheep's milk, from Shepherd's Cushions - aged, creamy, full flavored, and sold in a collector's clay bowl - to Bababloo, an aged blue made from mixed milk. Later you can stop by The Sheep Shoppe and take a chunk or two home with you.

If you miss the Shearing Festival, come to the creamery any Saturday or Sunday throughout the summer for Spring Lambing Tours. In May and June, the tours take place on weekends at 1 and 4 p.m. and you'll be able to view milking, cheese making and shearing, and of course, taste those delectable cheeses! The best part of all? Hundreds of newborn lambs frolicking on the farm.
