INNSIDE STORY
Fun on the water, fun on the trails
Just like that, summer is here and it’s time to think about getting out of town. Head to Cape May and participate in one of the New Jersey Audubon Nature Center’s programs like kayaking through the wetlands for a glimpse of Osprey, heron and egret. Go at sunset or under the full moon.
Take the whole family for a fun-filled day of seining at Beach Arlington Bay Beach on July 11th. Join Alliance for a Living Ocean in learning about the creatures living in Little Egg Harbor Bay and its surrounding watershed.
Row your boat in the Bayfront Beach rowing race—the most diverse open water rowing race in New Jersey—on July 18th. Or just join in the on-shore fun. Get your wheels turning with family bicycle rides coordinated by The Bicycle Hub of Marlboro. Rides begin at 8 a.m. on June 24th and July 22nd.
Hit the trails in Sandy Hook for an evening hike along the beach on June 21st. Guided nature walks are also happening in the Watchung Reservation in Union County from June 3rd to 30th. You can even volunteer to work on a trail project alongside Trailside Nature and Science Center staff.
And for those hot summer nights, get your groove on at the outdoor concerts being held up and down the shore!
- Ocean Place Blues By the Beach every Saturday night in Long Branch (starting June 10th)
- Sunday Concert series at the Lavallette Gazebo in Lavallette (starting July 2nd)
- Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Series every Thursday in July and August on the Atlantic City boardwalk

MEET THE INNKEEPERS
Rosemary & Tom Volker
The Inn at the Shore Bed & Breakfast, Belmar
An innkeeper’s life is always full of surprises, some more welcome than others. A lot of memorable things have happened to Rosemary and Tom Volker over the years, including the discovery of more rooms at the Inn at the Shore, which dates back to 1880.
“We found attics we didn’t know existed,” says Tom. “We suspected there were additional rooms but there was no visible entrance. We found out they were just covered with wallboard.” Through wandering around the inn, Tom eventually found another way to get up into the attic area where he found additional surprises like musical rocking horses and toy treasures from a bygone era.
Fun fact: The Inn at the Shore has a number of unique packages such as the “Get Out of Debt” weekend that includes a meeting with a financial planner.
Barbara & Andy Seaman
Spring Lake Inn, Spring Lake
“There’ve been people sleeping in the walls of this building since 1888,” says Andy Seaman.
People, and horses, that is. The inn was once Timothy Hurley’s Grand Central Stables, housing coachmen on the second floor and horses down below. Barbara and Andy have seen evidence of the inn as a hotel establishment as far back as 1910 in a photo of a family taken on the front porch.
One of the inn’s most charming features is a European-style front desk, reminiscent of those movie images of the guy sleeping behind the desk and popping up as soon as a guest arrives. “It’s just like that,” says Andy, “except I pop out from the kitchen.”
Fun fact: There’s an outdoor shower in the back of the inn. On occasion two sets of feet have been seen in one shower. “It’s a nice fun shower,” Andy adds.
EAT INN: Snack and salad recipes for summer
Try this crisp and refreshing Apple and Pear Salad recipe from Dancer Farm Bed and Breakfast Inn (New Egypt). A dash of cinnamon sugar makes it an even sweeter summertime treat.
Peachy keen is the season. Toss together Strawberries and Peaches with Granola, an easy, crunchy recipe from York Street House (Lambertville).
