INNSIDE STORY
Artists & Landscapes (and shore-scapes too!)

This issue portrays the diversity of New Jersey's culture, ranging from the laid back beaches to the arts and entertainment in the surrounding areas.

From July 1st to July 27th at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, the New Jersey International Film Festival takes place. Come to watch films from all over the world in this renowned cinematic event!

"Art for All Ages", a summer art series at the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill, runs from August 23rd to August 31st. This year focuses on fiber arts; families can join together to embroider and complete other enjoyable projects. Kids can learn while having fun with different workshops and hands-on craft activities.

Come enjoy your Saturday off at the Labor Day Arts & Crafts Extravaganza in Ocean City. Nine different states send artists, food specialists, and crafters for this fun festival, taking place on August 30th.

From August 2nd to August 3rd the 46th Annual Stone Harbor Art and Craft Show showcases vendors from all over the nation. This is a good opportunity to view and buy different types of artwork.

Every Wednesday, from June 18th to August 27th, attend the Sandy Hook Beach Concerts in Sandy Hook. These free beach concerts, sponsored by the Sandy Hook Foundation, offer a variety of music to please everyone in the family.

MEET THE INNKEEPERS
Carol & Gus Bruno
Scarborough Inn, Ocean City

One of the things Carol Bruno enjoys about being an innkeeper is the relationships built with the students who come to work with her via InterExchange, a student exchange program that brings kids from Europe and Asia to the US and has American students go to those countries to work for the summer.

The students get room and board at the Scarborough Inn and also get paid like employees.

"They often already know how to speak English or want to brush up, and this gives them the opportunity to do that, plus gives a glimpse of American life," explains Carol. "They get to see that we're not like all the news stories, plus it gives them a chance to meet other young people from all over the world they might not have met otherwise."

Carol and Gus have employed students from Asia and Africa, with fond recollections of two hard-working brothers from Eastern Europe who came to them ten years ago. The boys later went off to Harvard Medical School and became doctors here in the States.

Fun Fact: Gus is a fictional character in a mystery by Dolores Prom called "Seashells by the Seashore." Dolores is a daughter of the Workman family who owned and operated the Scarborough in the 1950s to 1960s. In fact, a hotel in the novel is named the "Scarsdale Inn!"

EAT INN: Enjoy the taste of summer with these fruity recipes!

For these Peach and Blueberry Muffins combine these two summer time fruits to make a single delicious treat. (Morning Dove Inn, Belmar)

For another fruity summer treat, try this Fruit Crisp -- easy as pie! (Victoria Guest House, Beach Haven)
