MEET THE INNKEEPERS
Dianne & Ed Hutchinson
Fairthorne B&B, Cape May
When Dianne and Ed Hutchinson got into the bed-n-breakfast business, they never expected they'd be in it for 17 years and counting. The Bell Atlantic retirees now enjoy a lifestyle their guests crave -- indulging in community events and activities around Cape May, bike riding around town, enjoying music and the arts and all the great restaurants.
While they love making their guests comfortable and hearing them say, "You have thought of everything I could possibly want," Dianne and Ed's style of innkeeping is less hands-on. They prefer to give their guests some space and allow them to unwind without hovering over them.
"We don't feel compelled to hold court," says Dianne, "unless they want us to spend time with them."
Which also leaves more time for Dianne and Ed to enjoy the things they love about Cape May. Dianne is president of the board of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Ed is very active in Kiwanis. They have a perfect blend of work and play and sometimes it's all the same.
"We never drank wine before we were innkeepers," Dianne adds. "Sometimes you need to sit down and relax after a 12-hour day, 7 days a week."
Fun fact: Dianne's grandmother once had a rooming house in Cape May. Says Dianne, "The innkeeping business is kind of in our blood."
EAT INN: Orange-y muffins and scones for moms, dads and everyone
